INSTALLATION OF NEW GENERAL ADMINISTRATION

There was an atmosphere of joy and celebration as the members of the General Chapter gathered in the Chapter hall to prepare for the installation of the new General Administration. Bearing their lighted candles, the Sisters and past administration led Sister Dia Stasiuk, General Superior;  Sister Lydia Anna Sawka, Vicar; and Councilors, Sister Mariela Rotzen, Sister Daniela Stefkova and Sister Nazariya Mykhaylyuk into the Chapel for Vespers.

The installation took place before the singing of “O joyful Light,” during which Sister Miriam Claire, past General and her Council handed over the symbols of office to Sister Dia and her Council.  Sister Miriam Claire offered words of support, fidelity and love to the incoming administration with an assurance of the prayers of all. No significant celebration in the Order is complete without gifts and flowers, and these were lovingly presented to the newly-elected General Superior and her Council.

Since God chose to place the seal of approval on this joyful gathering with rain and thunder, the banquet which followed took place under the protection of the covered part of the courtyard rather than in the courtyard proper. Nonetheless, there was no dampening of spirits in the festivities.

The Chapter will conclude its work on Wednesday ,July 24, 2013.

CHAPTER UPDATES

July 15-19, 2013

From Monday through Wednesday, the work of the Chapter continued with the Sisters spending time in groups sharing their ideas for a Vision Statement and the criteria and specific qualities needed for leadership in the Order. All of the processes following this work were focused on preparation for the election of the General Superior and General Councilors.

All those nominated for an office had an opportunity to address several questions related to the respective office for which they were being considered; likewise the Capitulars were able to ask questions of them. A period of prayerful reflection preceded the offering of the Divine Liturgy celebrated at noon at Santa Sofia. Bishop Dionizij, OSBM, had been invited to celebrate this solemn Divine Liturgy on the feast of our Holy Mother St. Macrina.

After a festive dinner and a period of rest, the Sisters gathered in the Chapter Hall to commence voting. Rev. Father Konstantin Adam, OP, a canonist and rector at the Angelicum presided at the election of the Superior General.  Sister Dia Stasiuk, OSBM of the Holy Trinity Province in Ukraine was elected and upon accepting the election, she was congratulated by all of the Sisters individually.

In commemoration of the 60^TH anniversary of the centralization of our Order and the 10^th General Chapter the Sisters received a copy of a booklet , entitled United in the Common Mission which dealt with a brief history of the Basilian Sisters from 1951 through 2013.

The election of the General Councilor commenced on July 20, 2013 following some group sharing.  The following Sisters were elected to the General Council: Sister Lydia Anna Sawka, First Councilor and Vicar; Sister Mariela Rotzen, Second Councilor; Sister Daniela Stefkova, Third Councilor; and Sister Nazariya Mykhaylyuk, Fourth Councilor. After congratulations were offered, the work of the Chapter was concluded for the day.

Community Day – July 14

Sunday, July 14 was designated as Community Day on the Chapter Program.

Guest speaker, the Rev. Dr. Stefan Batruch, spoke on the theme: Basilian Identity: a manifestation of monastic life in the 21^st century.  Father above all on the necessity of confidence in God in living the true Christian life as set forth by our holy Father, St. Basil.

In our day, we face seven challenges in this, namely; Activism, Consumerism, individualism, the multiplicity of information, conformism, numerous difficulties and dangers and self-sufficiency. Preventive measures and spiritual rules for dealing with the above included  the development and practice of contemplation; restraint ; the building of communal love, self-knowledge; poverty; fortitude and obedience.

Father emphasized that these challenges should not cause us to fear, but that they should be seen as opportunities to grow authentically on every level. Following the presentation, the Sisters met in international groups to discuss these themes and then presented a summary of their reflections to the entire Chapter body.

At 3:30 pm, the reports from the various Provinces continued.  At the hymn Joyful Light, during the Vespers which followed, a ceremony thanksgiving for the outgoing General Administration was held.  In the name of all the Sisters, Sister Dorothy Ann Busowski stated, “The sum of your lives of service cannot be measured in the simple word of thanks that we offer for your love, compassion, joyfulness, mercy, hope and challenge urging us to grow ever deeper in our love of God and the Basilian Order.  Sister Miriam Claire and her Council were then presented with flowers and a candle. 

Vespers was followed by a picnic in the courtyard during which many renditions of “God grant you many years” were sung celebrating the praying, healing and life-giving presence of the General Curia.

День Спільноти - 14 липня
Для проведення конференцій на тему: Василіянська ідентичність та її прояв у чернечому житті в ХХІ столітті було запрошено лектора Всечеснішого отця д-ра Стефана Батруха. Отець наголошував насамперед на необхідності жити справжнім християнським життям зосередженим на Бозі і пояснення цьому знаходимо в творах святого отця нашого Василія Великого.

Лектор виділив сім важливих викликів з якими ми найчастіше можемо стикатися, а саме: активізм, споживацтво, індивідуалізм, інформаційний хаос, комформізм, численні труднощі і небезпеки та самодостатність. Уникнути загроз нам допоможе практикування нами споглядання, стриманості, загальної любові¸ самопізнання, убожества, стійкості і слухняності.

Отець підкреслив, що ці виклики не повинні нас лякати, але що вони повинні розглядатися як можливості для дійсного зростання на кожному рівні. Сестри зустрілися в міжнародних групах для обговорення цих тем, а їхні думки про кожен з викликів створили загальну картину розуміння сестрами цих тем.

В 15:30 Провінційні настоятелі продовжили свої звіти. Під час вечірні на молитві Світло Тихе виходом генеральної адміністрації розпочалася церемонія подяки їм. Від імені всіх сестер сестра Доротея Анна Бусовська заявив, що "ваше служіння не може бути виміряне простими словами подяки, які ми пропонуємо за вашу любов, співчуття, радість, милосердя і надію. Вони стають завданням і вимагою для нас все глибше і глибше в любити Бога і ближніх. До цього закликає нас василіянська харизма. Мати Міріям Кларі і  Радницям було вручено квіти і свічки.

Після вечірні відбулося урочисте частування надворі під час якого в різних мовах сестри співали "Многая літа".

Blessing of Icon Screen in Generalate

On Saturday afternoon, the solemn blessing of the Icon Screen in the chapel of the Generalate took place. The icons were written by a Studite priest, Rev. Father Orest Kozak.  Basilian Father Porfirij, Pidruchnij, OSBM officiated at the ceremony assisted by six other members of the clergy. Many of the Capitulars from the various countries participated in this special occasion. Father Porfirij noted that for him it was an exceptional pleasure to see the growth of and the many changes in the Generalate over the course of 50 years. Sister Miriam Claire thanked all those present for praying with the Sisters on this unforgettable occasion. All were then invited to continue the festivities by partaking of the refreshments prepared by the Sisters.

 Чин посвячення очолив о.Порфирій Підручний, ЧСВВ. В молитві взяли учасoть ще шість отців та сестри Василіянки з багатьох країн світу, які на цей час зібрані на свою Х Генеральну Капітулу. О. Порфирій наголосив, що йому надзвичайно приємно протягом 50-ти років спостерігати розвиток і зміни в Генеральному домі сестер. Мати Міріям Клара подякувала всім отцям і сестрам за спільну молитву і звеличення цієї небуденної події та запросила до спільної трапези.

On Wednesday, July 10, the Chapter body gathered at Santa Sofia where they awaited the arrival of Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.  A portion of the Akathist to the Mother of God was celebrated after which Cardinal Sandri addressed the Sisters. His Eminence emphasized that the General Chapter in addition to carrying out the purpose for which it is convoked, is very much an ecclesial event in the life of the Church. The work of the Chapter is a true expression of our reality and identity and a witness to the world. Just as St. Basil was, so also are we called to be a light to the world, that light symbolized by our Basilian emblem.

In keeping with our Basilian hospitality, the Cardinal joined the Sisters and other participants for a celebratory dinner.  During the course of the dinner, Sisters took the opportunity to greet the Cardinal personally and to take a photo.

The work of the Chapter resumed at 4:00 pm. After approving the Chapter Procedure, the Capitulars elected the members of the Steering Committee as follows: Sister Joann Sosler (Philadelphia), Sister Norma Roznicki (Argentina) and Sister Josifa Simova (Presov, Slovakia). Sister Joann will serve as the head of the committee and Chapter Coordinator.

After a break, Sister Miriam Claire presented the report of the General Superior. In her introductory remarks, Sister Miriam Claire commended the Sisters for their faithfulness in living out their consecrated lives.   She observed in her formal and informal visitations with the Sisters that by their lives, they truly actualized what is written in our document, The Kenotic Way. As women consecrated to God, we give witness to and share the Good News through our lives of contemplative prayer, our lives in community and our service to the people of God wherever we are.  

Since the Capitulars had received her report beforehand, Sister Claire commented on various topics with which the report dealt or clarified issues raised by the Sisters.  With gratitude to Sister Miriam Claire for her report, this full day of work was brought to a close at 7:00 pm.

В середу  10 липня всі учасниці Капітули  зібралися в храмі Святої Софії, куди прибув кардинал Леонардо Сандрі, Префект Конгрегації Східних Церков. Після спільної молитви (частина  Акафісту до Богородиці) кардинал Сандрі звернувся до сестер. Його Високопреосвященство підкреслив, що Генеральна Капітула крім того, що виконує основну ціль, для якої  вона скликається, є також важливою подією в житті Церкви. Робота Капітули є істинним виразом нашої реальності та ідентичності і свідченням для світу. Подібно до того як Святий Василій, так і ми покликані бути світлом для світу, і це засвідчує символіка  нашого василіянського герба.

Після молитви кардинал розділив зі сестрами та іншими учасниками святковий обід. В той час сестри скористалися можливістю, щоб вітати кардинала особисто і зробити фотографії.

Капітула відновила роботу о 16:00. Після затвердження процесу Капітули було обрано членів Керівного комітету: Сестра Йоанна Сослер (Філадельфія), сестра Норма Розницька (Аргентина) і сестра Йосифа Шимова (Пряшів, Словаччина). Сестра Йоанна вибрана Координатором Капітули .

Після перерви Архимандриня Міріям Клара представила свій звіт. В ньому особливо високо оцінено сестер за їхню відданість у монашому житті. Мати зазначила, що під час офіційних і неофіційних відвідин сестер вона переконалася, що сестри практикують в своєму житті те, що написано в наших документах, Kенотичній Дорозі. Як Богопосвячені особи ми даємо свідчення і ділимося Доброю Новиною через наше життя споглядальної молитви, через наше життя в спільноті і через нашу службу Божому людові всюди, де ми знаходимося.

Оскільки сестри отримали цю доповідь заздалегідь, Мати Міріям Клара прокоментувала деякі теми, які в доповіді розглядалися і уточнила питання, підняті сестрами. Сестри подякували Мати Міріям Кларі за її доповідь. Повний робочий день було завершено             о 7 годині вечора.
